Annotation

Book One is the opening volume of Doctor Said, the first Azerbaijani-language novel to place suicide itself—not a single case, but the phenomenon as such—at its center. It introduces Said, a physician who cannot stop asking why people choose to die. Each suicide he examines refuses to yield a clean explanation; every file opens onto new contradictions, drawing him deeper into the moral, social, and intimate pressures that surround the act. As the cases accumulate, the line between professional inquiry and personal involvement blurs, and his reports begin to read like a record of his own unraveling.

The author refuses to shield his protagonist behind the comfort of a “higher cause.” Said is never allowed to float above the world he studies; he remains exposed to the ordinary frictions of life—family demands, work routines, money worries, the simple exhaustion of going on. His decision to devote himself to suicides is tested not in abstract debates but against these daily resistances. Doctor Said does not offer a doctrine on suicide; it stages an ongoing interrogation. Through its cases and voices, it leads the reader into the narrow, dim corridors of the psyche, where explanations falter and the will to live and the wish to disappear uneasily coexist.
